The Cultural Story Behind this Design:
Accouding to Maori ledgends … Long ago, in the heart of Aotearoa, the land was a canvas of untouched beauty—rolling hills, shimmering lakes, and towering forests whispered secrets only the wind could hear. The Maori people knew this land was a sacred gift, a living treasure that needed guardianship.
One evening, as the sun dipped behind the mountains, the god Tāwhirimātea, the spirit of the winds, noticed that people had begun to take the landscape’s beauty for granted. The skies grew heavy with sorrow, and the once vibrant colors of the land started to fade. To protect this precious beauty, Tāwhirimātea called upon his children—the playful fanflies. These tiny, shimmering creatures were created with wings like delicate fans, fluttering softly yet purposefully through every corner of the land.
The fanflies danced across forests and meadows, their gentle presence reminding all beings to care for, cherish, and protect the natural splendor. They carried blessings of mindfulness and reverence, weaving protection into every breath of wind that touched the earth.
Inspired by this legend, my design process embraces the “fanflies” (sandflies) as a living memento—not just to celebrate nature’s beauty but to honor its protection. Each creation is a mindful act, a playful yet kind reminder that our own inner beauties, like the landscapes, deserve gentle care and reverence. Through this spirit, we carry forward the legacy of guardianship, creating art that both delights the eye and nourishes the soul.
